Soon, pedestrian subways at 7 more Metro stations

Delhi Metro has decided to construct pedestrian subways in seven of the Metro stations on the 27km long Jankapuri West –Kalindi Kunj corridor. The corridor will be constructed as part of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s phase-3 in the next four years. The seven stations include Munirka, RK Puram, IIT, Panchsheel Park, Chirag Delhi, GK Enclave and Nehru Place.

These underpasses will be of great use to pedestrians to cross the road, especially senior citizens and women. Major residential and commercial areas such as Munirka, RK Puram, Panchsheel, GK Enclave, CR Park and Nehru Place will benefit immensely. People will be able to cross the road to reach the bus stop or the market, without buying a Metro ticket.

This is wonderful initiative by Delhi Metro, and the pedestrian facilities will definitely bring huge relief to pedestrians.

CBSE to include chapter on Road Safety

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has planned to include a chapter on road safety in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) social science syllabus from class 6 to 10. The chapter aims to teach students how to cross a street safely and correctly. The chapter will also impart lessons on understanding the traffic signs and using zebra crossings, foot-over-bridges and subways.

The Central Board of Secondary Education has already sent a draft chapter to the government. Members of the syllabus committee will meet the ministry members and finalise the draft soon. Will also take inputs from the Delhi Traffic Police, International Road Federation, Institute of Road Traffic Education and Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers and incorporate these to chapter.

Traffic police SMS service, to restart soon

Due to constant demand for traffic updates through SMS, the Delhi Traffic Police is in process to re-start the service through SMS very soon. Previously, the service was launched free of cost in June 2010. However, the Delhi Traffic Police had to discontinue it in September 2011 after the Telephone Regulatory Authority of India had put a ban on sending bulk text messages.

Those who had activated DND (do not disturb) service on their phones will have to send an SMS ‘join dtp’ to 09219592195 from his mobile phone to register this free service provided by DTP. This will also alert commuters about traffic diversions or advisory in the city. The SMS service is a two-way service in which a subscriber can send information about traffic movement and also receive traffic updates.

The Yamuna is poisoned and so are our vegetables

Fresh, green spinach leaves that we put on our plates contain more than just nutrients. A recent study conducted by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) indicates the presence of heavy metals in the vegetables that are grown with water from the Yamuna, making them potentially hazardous to health. The study says that dumping of sewage and industrial waste in Yamuna River has led to contaminated vegetables in the area.

The report, titled ‘Living in a cleaner environment in India: A strategic analysis and assessment’, says that levels of nickel, manganese and lead in Yamuna’s water were found to be higher than the international aquatic water quality criteria for fresh water. The high levels of contaminants in food were found exclusively in the urban areas and foodstuffs produced in the more rural areas were shown to have almost negligible traces of containment.

The study identified Wazirabad and Okhla barrage as the hotspots for soil contamination. This makes sense as there are known to be high levels of industrial wastage being drained in the areas.

E-challan for violating traffic rules, from March

Tightening the noose around commuters violating traffic rules, Delhi Traffic Police now will be seen with an electronic device rather the Challan Book. This hi-tech pilot project has already kicked off in RK Puram, Vasant Vihar and Kalyanpuri areas of Delhi. The fully-fledged e-challan system will be operation from March next year.

The e-challan system will help Traffic Police in maintaining online records. With the help of this technology, will be able to trace how many times a vehicle has violated the traffic rules.

Using this system, challans will be issued electronically with hand-held devices, and repeat offenders will pay more. Traffic cops will be armed with hand-held computers attached to a camera and a printer. Photographs of violations will be used as documentary evidence. The devices will be connected to a central server where details will be saved for future reference. The systems will also be GPS-enabled in the final phase. These will have a facility to swipe both credit cards and licenses, making the payment of challans easier.
